Lecturer in Music Production @ The University of Northampton

My journey into academia has been very unexpected, yet very well received!

Following the delivery of an online Guest Lecture during the UK lockdown of February 2021, I was invited to join the University as an Associate Lecturer to deliverer face-to-face content to students across both the Popular Music and Music Production BA (Hons) courses. During the academic year, I lead students through The Creative Practitioner, Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), and Music and Sound Design for Media modules before being promoted to Lecturer in Music Production.

The Creative Practitioner module seeks to develop professional skills relevant to working both in the music industry and further afield. With a focus on enterprise, entrepreneurialism, and professional development, students explore a variety of ways by which they might manage their professional careers.

The DAW1 module develops a solid understanding of the practical use and operation of Logic Pro X as a Digital Audio Workstation (i.e. a software multi-track recorder, editor, audio and MIDI sequencer). Although based primarily inside computer software, the module demonstrates how many of the elements of theory and practice covered are transferable to other, specialised areas. The module takes the form of lectures covering the theoretical and general concepts behind DAW techniques.

The Music and Sound Design for Media module introduces students to the essentials of storytelling, narrative and drama through music and sound design for media. While the sessions contain theoretical teaching to help analyse, reflect, and understand the relationship between the music, sound and moving image, the module is very hands on. We look at using field and location sound recorders, recording Foley and dialogue, using microphones and composing music to visual media.

In addition to my role as an Associate Lecturer, I moderated multiple modules for Program Leaders, supported recruitment, and lead Pro Tools sessions alongside Tony Platt to demonstrate the MIDI capabilities of Pro Tools to all students.

Following the success of last year, I am now excited to announce that as of last Monday (11th of July 2022), I have accepted the post of Lecturer In Music Production at the University on a part-time basis. The Music Production BA (Hons) course is one of the most comprehensive I have seen with modules encompassing an incredibly varied landscape within the music and sound fields!
